dinner • prep: 5 min • cook: 20 min • serves 4
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ¾ cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 hamburger buns, toasted
Instructions
-
Brown the beef: Cook ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking it up as it cooks, about 5 minutes. Drain excess fat.
-
Soften the veggies: Add onion and bell pepper. Cook for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds more.
-
Build the sauce: Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, Worcestershire, and vinegar. Bring to a simmer and cook for 8-10 minutes until thickened.
-
Serve: Season with salt and pepper. Pile onto toasted buns.
Notes
- Storage: The meat mixture keeps in the fridge for 4 days or freezes for up to 3 months.
- Variations: Use ground turkey for a lighter version. Add a pinch of cayenne for heat.
- Tips: Toast the buns in butter — it holds up better against the saucy filling.
- Make Ahead: Make the meat mixture ahead and reheat when ready to serve.
