Classic French Toast

Thick, custardy French toast with a golden crust and a hint of cinnamon — the lazy weekend breakfast done right.

breakfast prep: 5 min cook: 15 min serves 4

Ingredients

  • 8 thick slices brioche or challah bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter, for cooking
  • Maple syrup, for serving
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Fresh berries, for serving

Instructions

  1. Make the custard: Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon in a shallow dish.

  2. Soak the bread: Dip each bread slice into the custard, letting it soak for about 15 seconds per side. Don’t let it get soggy — just a good coating.

  3. Cook: Melt butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Cook bread for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through.

  4. Serve: Stack on plates. Dust with powdered sugar, top with fresh berries, and drizzle with maple syrup.

Notes

  • Storage: Cooked French toast freezes well. Reheat in the toaster for a quick weekday breakfast.
  • Variations: Use cinnamon-swirl bread for extra flavor. Add a tablespoon of orange zest to the custard for a citrusy twist.
  • Tips: Day-old bread works best — it’s drier and soaks up the custard without falling apart.
